A Victim Advocate at Work

These 10 Questions may help you determine whether or not you are a victim of abuse. Emotional and mental abuse cannot be seen as well as the signs of physical abuse. There are times when you question your sanity when things go wrong around you. There may be times when you can't quite put your finger on it, or you are too close to actually understand what is happening to you, or what is being done to you, though you may feel the emotions. Then there are times when our friends, family, or even neighbors will bring things to your attention. Red flags may even pop within you, but you can't quite bring yourself to accept the idea that someone is deliberately hurting you. Do not underestimate what you really do know in your heart. If you think something is wrong, you are likely to be accurate.

If you answer yes to any of the following questions, you may be a victim of abuse.

  1. Does your partner, boyfriend yell and scream at you?
  2. Does someone you know constantly criticize you?
  3. Are you made fun of?
  4. Are you told that you can’t ever do anything right?
  5. Does your partner tell you that you are responsible for how (s)he feels?
  6. Is your partner controlling?
  7. Are you told that if you just do what your partner wants you to do, things would be ok?
  8. Are you careful not to upset your partner? Are you trying too hard to please, getting nowhere, and losing yourself in the process?
  9. Do you feel like you are going crazy or losing your mind?
  10. Does your partner berate you and tell you what you should do in a controlling way, but insist he or she is doing it out of love and because they care about you?
